Ferris Smith—MoonFactory co-founder and creative director—needed a portfolio that showcased his character design work. The site needed to display a range of original characters, creature designs, and detailed process documentation while establishing his professional identity in the illustration industry.
The Challenge
Artist portfolios require a delicate balance. The work must be the star—large, detailed, and easily browsable. But the site also needs to communicate professionalism, facilitate client inquiries, and differentiate the artist from thousands of other portfolios online.

The Approach
We designed a gallery-style presentation that puts Ferris’s artwork front and center. Each piece gets the space it deserves, with room for zoom, detail views, and process documentation. The visual design is intentionally minimal—dark backgrounds that let the vibrant character work pop without competition.
The portfolio architecture makes it easy for art directors and clients to browse by category, style, or project. Each piece links to relevant context and commission information.
Key Features
- Original characters like “Riplash” (Helene) and the Space Odyssey character design series
- Creature design work showcasing imaginative biology and personality
- Mutinal character concepts exploring hybrid forms
- Design process breakdowns showing sketches through final renders
- Easy navigation by category, style, or project
Results
The portfolio successfully showcases Ferris’s range while maintaining a cohesive professional presentation. The design process documentation has been particularly valuable for attracting clients interested in understanding the creative approach, not just the final output.
