Affiliate FAQ

The questions other affiliates ask most often, grouped by topic.

If your question isn't here, email hello@moonfactory.dev — we'll answer it and probably add it.

Tracking

When someone clicks your link, we record their visit (with their consent) and remember you as the credited referrer for 30 days. If they become a paying client within those 30 days, you earn commission on what they pay.

See the tracking guide for the full explanation.

Can I have multiple tracking codes?

Yes. Create as many as you need from your dashboard — useful for separating campaigns, channels, or experiments. Each code reports separately so you can see what's working.

No, but it can be useful. Tracking links accept and preserve standard UTM parameters (utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_content, utm_term), which then show up against the referral row so you can slice your dashboard by source.

Why didn't my referral get tracked?

Most often one of these: the visitor declined marketing cookies, the visitor's first click was more than 30 days before they signed up, the visitor cleared cookies or used a different browser, or there was a typo in the link you shared.

If you're sure none of those apply, email hello@moonfactory.dev with the date you shared the link, the link itself, and any context. The tracking guide covers this in more detail.

Privacy laws (GDPR in Europe, ePrivacy directive, similar rules elsewhere) require that we honour visitor consent decisions. We don't override visitor preferences to make attribution work — even when it would help your earnings. The clicks are still logged in your analytics so you can see traffic, but conversions from non-consenting visitors don't attribute.

Commissions

How is my commission calculated?

It's a percentage of what your referred clients actually pay MoonFactory. Your specific rate is shown on your dashboard.

A few details: you earn on what's paid (so partial payments earn proportionally), annual subscriptions accrue monthly across the year rather than all at once, and the rate that applies is the one in effect on your account when the invoice is paid.

See the overview for more on the commission structure.

Why does it take 30 days for my commission to clear?

The 30-day holding period exists to protect against refunds, chargebacks, and last-minute fraud flags. If any of those happen during the window, the commission can be cancelled before money moves rather than recovered after the fact. Once the 30 days pass cleanly, the commission is eligible for the next payout.

A referred client signed up but I don't see a commission. Why not?

A few possible reasons:

  • They haven't paid an invoice yet — you earn on payment, not signup.
  • They're on a free trial — commissions only accrue when there's actual paid revenue.
  • The plan they're on isn't a qualifying plan — some specific configurations don't generate commission.
  • The referral didn't attribute to you (see the tracking section above).

If none of those fit and you're confident a commission should exist, email hello@moonfactory.dev with what you know.

Can my commission be reduced after the fact?

Yes, in two cases:

  1. Clawbacks — if the client gets a refund or chargeback, the commission attached to that invoice is reversed. Clawbacks during the 30-day window just cancel the pending amount; clawbacks after payout are recovered from your next batch.
  2. Adjustments — if there's an error or an issue with a commission, an admin can apply an adjustment (up or down) with a reason recorded.

Both show up as separate events on your ledger so you have full history.

What's a "fraud-flagged" commission?

Sometimes the system detects patterns that look like potential abuse and holds a commission for human review. Held commissions stay in your ledger but don't clear until the review completes — they either resume normal lifecycle or get voided.

If a commission is held and you believe it's legitimate, email hello@moonfactory.dev. We won't describe specific fraud signals publicly because that would just help bad actors evade them.

Payouts

What's the minimum balance to get paid?

There's a minimum payout threshold so small balances don't get eaten by transfer fees. The exact current threshold (set in USD) is shown on your Payouts page. If your cleared balance is below it, the balance carries forward to the next batch.

How often do payouts run?

Payouts run on a regular schedule. The next scheduled date and the status of any pending batch are shown on your Payouts page.

See the payouts guide for more detail.

My payout failed. What do I do?

Check your email for any messages from our payment partner (most failures trace back to additional verification they need from you). Then go to Settings → Payout methods to confirm your bank details are still current.

The funds aren't lost — they're returned to your cleared balance and re-included in the next batch once the issue is resolved.

How do I change my bank details?

Go to Settings → Payout methods and follow the prompts. You'll need a fresh six-digit code from your authenticator app — payout method changes are treated as sensitive actions to protect against payout redirection attacks.

See the security guide for more on sensitive actions.

Can I get paid in something other than USD?

Your commissions are recorded in the currency of each invoice and converted to USD using the FX rate at the time the commission accrued. The actual payout currency depends on what your bank account supports through our payment partner.

For non-standard requests (different currency, alternative payment method), email hello@moonfactory.dev — we handle alternatives case-by-case.

Tax

When will I get a 1099?

If you're a US affiliate and your paid commissions in a calendar year exceed $600, we file a Form 1099-NEC for you and send you the recipient copy in January for the previous tax year. You can download it any time from Settings → Tax forms.

If your paid commissions are below the threshold or you're outside the US, you won't receive a 1099.

I'm outside the US. Do I still need to submit a tax form?

Yes — you'll need a W-8BEN (individuals) or W-8BEN-E (entities) on file. We don't file 1099s for non-US affiliates, but we still need confirmation of your tax status.

Whether you owe taxes on your MoonFactory commissions in your own country depends on your country's rules — talk to a local tax professional for specifics.

Why do I need to enter my TIN with extra security?

Your tax identification number is one of the most sensitive pieces of identity data on the account, so entering it requires a fresh six-digit code from your authenticator app. This protects it from being captured by anyone who might briefly hold your session.

It's encrypted at rest and only the last four digits are visible to admins for reference.

Can MoonFactory advise me on my taxes?

No. We can explain the program (when 1099s are generated, what forms are needed, etc.) but we can't give personal tax advice. For your specific situation, talk to an accountant or tax professional who knows your jurisdiction.

Compliance

Do I really have to disclose every single time?

Yes, every single time, in the post / video / email / podcast where you're recommending MoonFactory. Disclosure has to be visible in the same context as the recommendation — a generic "this site contains affiliate links" line on a separate Terms page doesn't cover individual posts.

The good news: doing it right is genuinely simple. See the FTC compliance guide for examples.

What happens if I forget to disclose once?

You'll get an email with a friendly heads-up, the specific page that triggered the flag, and suggestions for fixing it. No commission impact, no account changes — first-time issues are educational.

If it keeps happening on multiple posts, the response escalates to paused payouts and eventually termination. See the FTC compliance guide for the full ladder.

Not without prior written approval. Bidding on branded terms (e.g. "moonfactory" in Google Ads) is one of the most common ways affiliates damage a brand by competing with the brand's own ads or trapping organic traffic. We may approve specific arrangements case-by-case but the default answer is no.

If you want to discuss it, email hello@moonfactory.dev.

Account

How do I change my email?

Email changes go through a re-verification step because they affect your tracking and identity. From Settings → Profile, request the change and follow the prompts.

If you've lost access to the email currently on your account, email hello@moonfactory.dev from the email you'd like to switch to and we'll work through identity verification.

Can I temporarily pause my account?

There's no formal pause feature, but if you need to step back from active promotion, you can simply not share your tracking links for a while. Existing referrals still convert and pay out normally.

If you need a longer-term hold (extended leave, etc.), email us so we can note it on your account.

How do I deactivate or delete my account?

Go to Settings → Data (/affiliate/settings/data) and request account deletion. There's a 30-day cooling-off period — during those 30 days you can cancel the request and your data comes back. After 30 days, the data is anonymised permanently.

Important: Any pending (not-yet-cleared) commissions are forfeited on deletion, so if you have a cleared balance, trigger a payout first before deleting.

Can I export my data?

Yes. From Settings → Data, request a full export of your affiliate data — profile, referrals, commissions, payouts. The export is generated on demand and available as a download. Use it for your own records or for porting to another system.
